Wilton Fights Back for Win

Wilton's baseball team didn't figure to get much of a challenge from Bridgeport Central on Wednesday. But in the bottom of the fifth, the Warriors trailed the Hilltoppers, 1-0, and were running out of time. Fortunately for the Warriors (15-4 overall, 14-4 Fairfield County Interscholastic Athetlic Conference) they scored four times in the fifth and Kurt Marut made it stand up for a 4-1 win over Central (5-4, 3-14).

"At this point in the season a win is a win is a win," Wilton head coach, Tim Eagen said.

The rally in the bottom of the fifth kept Marut's record untarnished as it jumped to 8-0 during his spectacular senior season. The Warriors' ace struggled early, but still fired seven innings. He struck out nine, walked three, allowed two hits and one earned run. "Coming out in the beginning I felt kind of pumped up and was wild, but kind of relaxed a little," Marut said.

In the bottom of the fifth trailing 1-0, the Warriors benefited from a tiring pitcher and were finally making the adjustments that Eagen and the other coaches were telling them to make against the Hilltopper hurler. As the head coach described the bottom of the fourth, "And Eureka look what happens."

The Warriors next game will be tomorrow when they travel to Bullard Havens Tech for an non-conference game before wrapping up the regular season on Friday against St. Joseph.
