Westport, Stamford Host Weekend Races

The final race of the Westport Summer Series on Saturday and a 5K run in Stamford on Monday are among the local running options in Fairfield County this weekend. Many runners will also head up the coast to compete in the New Haven Road Race, which includes a 20K and a 5K.

In Westport, Staples High School will host a 10-mile run Saturday at 8 a.m. in the concluding event of the 10-race series. Westport's Tom Harding won the race last year and Liz Herbert won the women's race. Herbert, of Darien, won the 9.3-mile race last week in Westport. It was her third victory of the series.

The Jewish Community Center in Stamford will conduct a 5K on Monday beginning at 9 a.m. The race helps support the center's preschool. More information is available on its website. The race could be an option for runners who had planned to race Saturday in Newtown, where a 5K has been canceled because of damage from Hurricane Irene.

The races in New Haven on Monday begin at 8:15 a.m. The New Haven races have traditionally had some of the largest and most competitive fields in the state. More information is available on the race website. For a complete list of regional running events, log on to www.hitekracing.com.
