Westport Race Series Heating Up

A record number of runners could battle near-record temperatures when the Road Runners Summer Series continues in Westport Saturday. The venerable series of 10 progressively longer races, now in its 48th year, approaches the one-third point when the third event of the season, a 3.8-mile run, goes off from Longshore Country Club at 8 a.m.

In spite of the hot weather that has blanketed the area, near record fields of 153 and 171 runners showed up for the first two races. If the latter figure is reached this weekend, it would match the record for the third race, set 30 years ago.

Daniel Lennox of Bedford and Darien's Liz Herbert won last Saturday's 3.1 mile race, also from Longshore. This weekend's race follows the same shoreline course, adding a loop of the Compo Beach perimeter.

Registration for all Road Runners races starts at 7:30 a.m., and prizes are awarded to the top three male and female finishers who have not already won. There is also a Series grand prix based on runners' placing in seven age groups over the course of the 10 races.
