Westport Abuzz About GFA Basketball

There's a buzz about the boys basketball team at Greens Farms Academy this winter. Besides new coach Doug Scott, a Darien resident, the addition of 6-foot, 9-inch sophomore Sean Obi has the Dragons optimistic that they can become a contender in the Fairchester Athletic Association.

The roster also includes a mix of players from Norwalk, Darien, Westport, Greenwich, Weston and Fairfield as the Drags look to improve after going 12-16 last year, including a 1-11 mark in the FAA.

Obi moved to Greenwich from Nigeria and enrolled at Greens Farms this summer. Scott says he is attracting the interest of Division I college programs. "He works his tail off every day,'' Scott says. "He gets up at 4:30 every morning to read and work out. He's as good a student as he is a basketball player."

Dan Chase of Weston and Norwalk's Chris Morency serve with C.J. Smith as the team's tri-captains. The junior class includes Brian Comey, who lives in Westport after transferring from Virginia. Eric Walsh, Christian Papic and Wills Rooney of Darien are also juniors. Huntger Eggers of Greenwich, juniors Dan Hoffman and Will Pavlis, both of Fairfield, and freshman Kam Mickens of Bridgeport will also see time on the court for GFA.

Directing the show is Scott, who has coached AAU and junior teams in the area for more than 20 years. He worked last year as an assistant at St. Luke's, helping the team reach the New England Prep School Athletic Conference finals last winter. GFA should get an early assessment when it plays Brunswick in its season-opener Monday.

"The plan is to battle very tough opposition in an effort to become tourney-ready by season's end,'' Scott said. "The goal is to qualify for NEPSAC tourney for the second straight season, and then make their best run at a New England championship."
