UConn Teammates Go To Astros, Red Sox in Draft

University of Connecticut outfielder George Springer and pitcher Matt Barnes are on the road to the bigs. The Husky teammates were selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.

Springer was taken by the Houston Astros as 11th overall. Barnes was projected to go in the Top 15 but fell slightly and was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 19th pick in the draft. Red Sox prospect Barnes is reportedly a lifelong New York Yankees fan.

Springer is from New Britain, and Barnes is a Bethel native. The Big East tweeted that Springer and Barnes are the first teammates from that conference to be drafted together in the first round since 1989.

UConn beat Clemson, 14-1, in the opening round of the college baseball playoffs Monday night, advancing to the Super Regionals.
