Runners, bikers and swimmers will descend on Weed Beach in Darien for the sixth annual ITPMAN Triathlon. The event begins at 7 a.m. Saturday. There is also a duathlon for children. The races benefit the Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura Foundation. ITP is a rare blood disorder.
The event starts and finishes in Darien. It begins with a half-mile swim, followed by a 10-mile bike ride that rolls into New Canaan and returns to Darien. The race finishes with a 5-mile run that finishes at Weed Beach. USA Triathlon sanctions the event.
The duathlon for children is divided into two ages divisions. Kids ages 6 to 10 will run a quarter-mile, ride bikes for 2 miles and finish with a half-mile run. Boys and girls ages 11 to 17 will run a half-mile, ride bikes for 4 miles and finish with a 1-mile run. This is the first year for the duathlon.
Last year, 299 athletes finished the race. Cliff Scherb of New York won the men's race, followed by Don Gustavson of Fairfield and Mark Desautelle of Darien. Jessi Stensland of San Diego won the women's race, followed by Wilton's Katie Bottini. Kerstin Blomquist of New Haven grabbed third.
