Sunday Stroll is a Simple Pleasure

Penny Catrell isn't out to win races or trophies or run personal bests. This Mother's Day, the New Canaan woman will be participating in the 5-kilometer walk at Calf Pasture Beach for the simple pleasure of spending time with her daughter. Sunday's walk and the 10k run are sponsored by Lightfoot Running Club and the Norwalk Recreation and Parks Department.

"I have four kids, and if your kids want to spend time with you it's the greatest thing in the world,'' says Penny, who lives in New Canaan. She will walk in the 5k with her daughter, Cary Ogden. This is the first time Penny and Cary will participate in the event.

Cary Ogden recently moved back from Chile, married and moved to Pomfret. She asked her mother earlier this year to participate in the walk, which benefits the Norwalk Senior Center. Race proceeds benefit the American Heart Association. The race begins at 8 a.m. Last year, over 400 runners completed the 10k. Westport's Nadeem Ahmad won the men's race, and Mary Zengo paced the women.

Penny's children are spread in four states. She will walk with Cary Sunday, but it doesn't matter what the activity is. The important thing to her is spending time with her daughter. "We could be watching baseball together or doing Bananagrams,'' Penny says. "The greatest thing is spending time with your kids. They're all unique. It's just great to spend time together."
