Stamford Woman Wins Westport Triathlon

WESTPORT, Conn. – Stamford's Megan Kelly made a triumphant return to the local triathlon scene Sunday by winning the women's division of the Westport Kiwanis Triathlon at Compo Beach. New York's Shane Meehan won the men's race for the third straight time.

Kelly, who gave birth to triplets in May, led Connecticut women finishers in last month's age group triathlon championships in Vermont. That was the Greenwich native's first competition since delivering the babies. On Sunday, she cruised across the finish line in 43:52, good for seventh overall. The race consisted of a half-mile swim, a 5.5-mile bike ride and a 2.2-mile run.

Cheryl Clark finished second among women in 48:43, and Cara Bufkin was third in 48:57.

Meehan won the men's race in 38:18.4, followed by Don Gustavson in 39:22 and Jon Chesto in 40:07.

The contestants endured choppy waters in Long Island Sound, which made swimming difficult for the first leg of the race.

The race had 255 finishers, a significant increase from last year, when 207 finished. Complete results are available online.
