Stamford Athlete Wins World Triathlon Title

STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford's John Cook won the 75- to 79-year-old age group Sunday in the International Triathlon Union World Championships in Beijing. Greenwich's Karen Newman was 11th in the women's 50-54 division.

Cook, 76, finished the Olympic distance course in 3 hours, 50 minutes and 13 seconds. It is the first world title for Cook, who finished 15th in the 2005 Age Group World Championships in Honolulu.

Newman finished 11th in the women's 50-54 division in 2:50.15. The Olympic distance consists of a 1.5-kilometer (0.93-mile) swim, a 40k (24.8-miles) bike ride and a 10K (6.2-mile) run.

Results will be available on the International Triathlon Union website.
