SportsFest Celebrates Baseball

If baseball is your game of choice, you'll want to consider attending the Park City SportsFest on Saturday, May 8 from noon-6 p.m. at the People’s Bank Plaza on Main Street in downtown Bridgeport.

Presented by People’s United Bank, the event is marking its fifth anniversary in Bridgeport and this year’s SportsFest is in conjunction with the Bridgeport Bluefish’s day-night doubleheader at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Game times for the Bluefish’s Atlantic League twin bill with the Long Island Ducks are 1:05 and 7:05 p.m.

Park City SportsFest is a free event designed for family fun. The festival includes interactive and educational activities from a variety of sports and fitness-related organizations. Food vendors also will be on site.

Among the highlights each year are appearances by former and current area sports personalities. Both Central High graduate Kurt Kepshire, who pitched three years in the major leagues for the St. Louis Cardinals and won 10 games for the NL Champion Redbirds in 1985, and San Francisco Giants pitcher Phil Nastu, a standout at Bassick High and the University of Bridgeport, will sign autographs from 1-2 p.m. Outfielder Angel Echevarria, who compiled a .280 lifetime batting average in the major leagues following an outstanding career at Bassick and Rutgers University, and former big league pitcher Mike Porzio, a Fairfield Prep graduate, will sign between 2-3 p.m.

Fairfield author Don Harrison will be signing copies of his book, Connecticut Baseball: The Best of the Nutmeg State, from 1 to 3 p.m. John LaBarca of WSTC-1400/WNLK-1350 is the emcee for the event, which is coordinated by the Fairfield County Sports Commission. There is free parking at the People’s United Bank garage.
