Sports Group to Honor Its Finest

The Fairfield County Sports Commission announced its 2010 Sports Persons of the Year in each of the 15 communities it serves. The local sports honorees will be recognized at the annual Sports Night awards dinner, at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich.

In each community, a panel led by a town representative of the commission selected a Sports Person of the Year. Winners were deemed to have had the most positive impacts in their sports from August 2009 to August 2010.

The honorees include: Bridgeport, Erica Beverly, University of Hartford women's basketball; Darien, Tony Farren, president of Darien Little League; Easton, Tyler Colby, two-sport standout at Joel Barlow High School; Fairfield, Fairfield American Little League; Greenwich, Cam Atkins, a hockey player on the national champion team at Boston College; Monroe, Ed Butler, Masuk High School indoor track coach; New Canaan, girls hockey state and FCIAC champion team; Norwalk, Kevin Pierre-Louis and Silas Redd, former standout football players at King; Shelton, Pat Gillen, state and New England champion wrestler; Stamford, Westhill High School girls soccer state champion team; Stratford, Lauren Sara and Brandon Sherrod, standout high school athletes; Trumbull, Joe DeSabia, Legion baseball director; Westport, Brian McMahon, youth sports administrator; Westport, Bob Davis, youth baseball umpire; and Wilton, girls lacrosse high school FCIAC champions.

The Fairfield County Sports Commission is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that is the one-stop resource for the sports community, with a mission of promoting fitness and personal development through sports. The commission, with the exception of the executive director, is an all-volunteer group that gives financial support and its resources back to its communities, primarily focused on the 110,000 school-age youngsters.
