STAMFORD, Conn. Several world class and nationally ranked skaters will participate as Terry Conners Rink in Stamford hosts a skating show and candlelight ceremony to benefit the Breast Cancer Survival Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Stamford resident Elizabeth Stern, who was recognized as the national champion of the Philippines in 2008, is among the skaters scheduled to perform. She represented the Philippines in competitions from June 2008 to May 2010. She currently attends Northeastern University in Boston. Her mother, Marlene,died in February after a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 52 and overcame breast cancer before developing the cancer that later claimed her life.
Weve been working on this for a few months, said Jeffrey Stern, Elizabeths father and Marlenes husband. We felt like we wanted to do something to help people who have battled cancer. Elizabeth Stern added, "My mom wrote a book to help give people hope and inspiration in overcoming challenges and donated all the proceeds of the book to the Breast Cancer Survival Center. This seems like the least we can do."
Tickets for the skating show and candle-lighting remembrance are $10. Guests can also register to have their loved ones who have battled cancer added to the candle-lighting celebration.
Other skaters scheduled to attend include Norwalks Kirstyn Nanista, who has been a Junior National competitor in each of the past two years. The Shadows, a team from the Conners-based Southern Connecticut Synchronized Skating team, will also take part. ChristineMerolla of Wilton, who competed in the Skate Games of America earlier this year, will also skate. Other mens, ladies and pairs skaters will perform as well.
Kirby Asunto, a New Jersey-based 13-year-old up-and-coming pop singer, will also perform.
Proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Survival Center. The nonprofit organization offers post-treatment support and education for survivors and their families. It operates at several Fairfield County venues, including Norwalk Community College and the Wilton Library.
The Stamford Youth Hockey Association yielded its ice time to the benefit, Jeffrey Stern said.That was one of several logistical hurdles organizers had to overcome. Many skaters are also competing or in training. Were hoping for a good night for a good cause, Stern said.
