Seven Teams Battle for Girls Soccer Playoff Spots

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. ? Girls soccer enters the final week of the regular season with plenty still up for grabs. Just four of the eight playoff spots in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament have been decided, setting up a thrilling, down-to-the-wire finish.

So far, St. Joseph (Trumbull), Greenwich, Westhill (Stamford) and New Canaan have wrapped up playoff berths. Fairfield Warde, Wilton, Darien, Trumbull, Staples, Fairfield Ludlowe and Ridgefield are all still in the hunt. Here's a look at games that will decide the playoff picture.

Monday, Oct. 24

Staples at Wilton, 3:45 p.m. ? The ninth-ranked Wreckers (6-5-2) are fighting for their playoff lives as they hit the road to take on one of the hottest teams in the conference. Staples has struggled to remain consistent this season, winning two games in a row just twice this year. The Wreckers play their final three games on the road, with McMahon and Stamford coming after Wilton. They will likely need to win at least two to punch a ticket to the tournament.

Wilton started the year on an unsettled note with its coach resigning amid controversy, only to become one of the feel-good stories of the season. The Warriors went 0-2-3 at the start, but then dramatically turned things around. The Warriors have gone 7-0-1 since and are currently seeded sixth.

Darien at Fairfield Warde, 4 p.m. ? Separated by just two points, fifth-ranked Warde and seventh-ranked Darien are both struggling to find their rhythm after solid starts to their seasons. A win for either team would put them in a favorable position come playoff time.

Westhill at Greenwich, 6 p.m. ? Both teams have already secured playoff spots, so this will simply be a bit of seed-wrangling. However, it will be the first time Greenwich's gritty senior leader Shannon Colligan has taken on Westhill's freshman phenom Jess Laszlo. From an entertainment standpoint, this is about as good as it gets for girls high school soccer.

Tuesday, Oct. 25

Fairfield Ludlowe at Trumbull, 4 p.m. ? A loss for Ludlowe, which has lost two of its last three games, will likely end its playoff hopes. The Falcons (6-7-1) are currently seeded tenth and take on top-ranked St. Joseph in their season finale on Thursday. Trumbull is coming off two blowout wins and played Greenwich and St. Joseph tough in a pair of close losses.

Thursday, Oct. 28

Wilton at Darien, 4:15 p.m. ? Depending on Monday's results, this could be a game to decide the final spots in the conference tournament. Either way, it will be an entertaining game.

The FCIAC girls soccer tournament begins Saturday, Oct. 29. First-round games will be played at the higher-seeded team's home field.
