Most people think of running as a solitary sport, but the hundreds that raced in Waveny Park Tuesday evening know the value of teamwork. The 38th annual Two-Man Six-Mile Relay pitted 85 pairs of runners of all ages against each other in alternating mile-long shifts. This years overall winners were Dariens Jake McCauley and Artem Skobrev, with a time of 30:33. The first all-female team to finish was Danielle Klein of Trumbull and Rosa Moriello of Naugatuck, at 36:40. The top co-ed pair was Meg Ryan and Jonathan Foster, clocking in at 33:36.
Steve Norris started the annual race in 1972, as a way for local collegiate runners to tune up before the cross-country season started. He said that in the early years, the race was a much smaller, all-male affair. One year we only had three teams show up, he said.
This years race drew a much wider range of athletes, with ages ranging from 8 to 70. But its still a great draw for college runners. We took a few weeks off after our season, because we were kind of injured, said Moriello, who runs for Boston University. Her teammate runs for cross-town rival Northeastern. Were using this as part of our base training.
McCauley and Skobrev will compete next season at Tufts and the University of Connecticut, respectively. They also used the race to get back into racing mode. Its a tough race to run because its three consecutive miles, said Skobrev. Five minutes of rest kind of feels like one minute.
