Runners Ready To Stride on Mother's Day

This Mother's Day, runners and walkers of all ages can celebrate mom and support local charities, all while enjoying a morning of fun and fitness. The Lightfoot Running Club and the Norwalk Recreation and Parks Department will present the 34th Annual Mother's Day 10K Race on Sunday at Calf Pasture Beach.

For the third consecutive year, the event will also include a5K Health Walk. Net proceeds from the race will be donated to the American Heart Association. Proceeds from the 5K walk will be donated to local charities. Both the race and the walk begin at 8 a.m.

A staple of the local race calendar, the Annual Mother's Day 10K race attracts hundreds of area runners, ranging from serious competitors to recreational joggers. The race features a flat, fast USATF-certified 10,000-meter (6.2-mile) course. In addition to overall top male and female finisher awards, the race includes age group awards, from 12 and under up to 70 and older. Special awards will also be given to the first three mothers who finish the 10K race, as well as for the top police officer, fireman and Lightfoot Running Club member.

The 5K Health Walk is designed to allow moms and children of all ages to join in the fun. The 5K is hosted in conjunction with the Norwalk Department of Health's "Be a NorWALKER" program to encourage residents to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. Like the 10K race, the walk will start and finish at the Calf Pasture Beach parking lot and features a scenic route along Long Island Sound.

"The Annual Mother's Day 10K race and 5K health walk offers something for everyone, from elite runners to those who run or walk purely for fitness and enjoyment," said Don Capone, president of the Lightfoot Running Club. "We are pleased to once again partner with the Norwalk Recreation and Parks Department to create a family-friendly event that pays tribute to moms everywhere."

The 2011 Mother's Day 10K and 5K Health Walk will be held in honor of the late Capt. Edward T. Donellan of the Norwalk Police Department.
