Runners Have a Lot of Weekend Options

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – There are variety and abundance for runners this weekend as they lace up their sneakers for races in Fairfield County and beyond.

There are two races Saturday in Fairfield County. The Nevah Surendah to Parkinsons 5K goes off at 9 a.m. in Westport. Also at 9 a.m., Georgeown hosts the Strength for Sydney 5K. On Sunday, the 6.8-mile Great Train Race from New Canaan to Wilton begins at 8:25 a.m.

Many runners will also venture to Hartford Saturday for the ING Hartford Marathon. There is also a half-marathon and relay. Last year, Fairfield’s Megan Peterson finished eighth among women in 3:02:00.

The Westport race starts at Saugatuck Rowing Club. Race day registration is $20.  Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Registration for the race in Georgetown begins at 8 a.m. at Elevation Spinning Studio, 4 Old Mill Road, in West Redding. Proceeds benefit the Smith Magenis Syndrome Research Foundation. Registration is $30 on race day, $15 for children.

The Great Train Race is a fun event that begins at the New Canaan railroad station and ends at the Wilton station. By train, it takes 59 minutes and two transfers to make the trip. Runners get a chance to challenge the Iron Horse to see if they can make the trip in a shorter time span. Runners need to make arrangements for transportation back to the starting line.
