Runners Flock to Weston Race

It seems like just about everybody in Weston runs in the annual 5-kilometer race on Memorial Day weekend. That's not quite true, but the field is kind of like the Weston Running Championships. Last year, nearly 60 percent of the finishers were Weston residents, according to race director Karen Sitney.

"The race is a big part of it, but the whole weekend has a big community feel to it,'' says Karen, who is directing the race for the first time. There were 544 finishers in last year's race, and this year could be even bigger. There were nearly 400 pre-registered runners as of Thursday.

Sitney, a lifelong runner, took over as the race director this year. She has competed in over 30 marathons. She coordinated a volunteer staff of nearly 100 people to sign up sponsors, register runners, and purchase supplies. "The biggest surprise for me was finding out how many people who have something to do with the race,'' Karen says. "The volunteers have been tremendous."

The race is the only fund-raiser for the Weston Parent Teacher Organization. Sitney said one of the reasons for her involvement is she has a son who is a student at Weston High.

The race begins at 8:30 a.m. at Weston High School. A fun run for the kids goes off at 8 a.m. Runners can pre-register for the race Friday from 3-5 p.m. at Weston High. Runners who have already pre-registered can pick up their goody bags. Click here for more race information.
