Runners Brace for the Boston Buildup

The only predictable thing about the annual Boston Buildup running series is that the weather will be unpredictable. The 33rd edition of the four-race sequence begins Sunday at 10 a.m. with a 10-kilometer race at Brien McMahon High School.

The races include a 15K, 20K and 25K at various sites in Fairfield County. The series is especially popular with runners who are training for the Boston Marathon in April. A record field is expected for Sunday’s race, said race director Jim Gerweck, based on the number of pre-registered runners. Runners can register through the clubct.org website, at Runner's Roost in Darien or on race day.

Weather has been one of the challenges runners and race organizers face. There have been a few postponements due to snowstorms, and runners have faced slick roads on several occasions. Racers have also enjoyed the opposite extreme. Some years, temperatures have climbed into the 60s for some of the races.

Tim Milenkevich and Tina Senft won the overall series titles last year. Stamford’s Anatolie Vartosu (40-49) and Peter Hohmeister (50-59) were among the age group winners on the men’s side. Cos Cob’s Emmy Stocker won the women’s 50-59 age group.
