Rowers Start World Championships

On the side of the globe, rowers from Fairfield County will take to the water in Bled, Slovenia, in the World Rowing Championships.

New Canaan's Andrew Campbell is the first local rower to compete Sunday in the lightweight men's single sculls. Other rowers from Fairfield County competing for the U.S. in the world meet include Brian de Regt of Rowayton, Charlie Cole of New Canaan, Norwalk's Dan Walsh, Weston's Nick LaCava, Stamford's Alex Stein and Greenwich's Andrew Johnson.

Campbell, who will be a sophomore at Harvard, finished third earlier this summer at the World Rowing Under 23 championships. He rowed for Yan Vengerovskiy at Maritime Rowing Club.

De Regt rows with Jon Winter in the lightweight doubles scull. This is the second straight world championship run for the duo, who finished 11th last year in New Zealand.

Walsh will compete in the men's eight on Sunday. The 32-year-old Walsh is a 1996 graduate of Brien McMahon High School and has been on 11 national teams. He was with the eight that finished fourth at last year's world championships and won a bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics.

The other rowers from Fairfield County will start later in the meet. Cole, also a former student of Vengerovskiy at Maritime, will row on the Men's Four. LaCava will row with the Lightweight Men's Eight, while Stein is the coxswain of the Adaptive Four, which includes Johnson.
