Rowers from Norwalk, Rowayton, Riverside and New Canaan will be competing for the United States when the World Rowing Championships begin Sunday in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand.
Brian de Regt of Rowayton will compete with Jon Winter of New Haven in the lightweight men's double. They will race Sunday in the first of three heats against Greece, Great Britain and Germany. The top two finishers advance to the semifinals.
Weston's Nick LaCava will also be in action Sunday in the lightweight men's four. They race against Japan, Thailand, Austria and Switzerland. The top two advance to the semifinals.
Andrew Johnson of Riverside will compete in an adaptive event on Monday. Johnson, who is legally blind, will compete in the legs-trunk-arms four with coxswain. They will face Russia, Canada, Poland and Germany. Victoria Burke of Redding, who started rowing at the Saugatuck Rowing Club, will compete in the lightweight women's quadruple sculls on Monday.
Norwalk's Dan Walsh and New Canaan's Charlie Cole will be in the men's eight heats on Monday. Great Britain, The Netherlands, Russia and Australia will compete against the U.S. Only the winner advances to the final. The rest move to repechages.
