Rowayton Rower Named to U.S. Team

Brian de Regt of Rowayton and his partner Jon Winter of New Haven have been named to the 2010 U.S. Senior National Team and will represent the United States at the 2010 World Rowing Championships, Oct. 31- Nov. 7 in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand. The duo just returned to the US after spending two months in Europe, competing in the lightweight double sculls in all three stops of the 2010 Rowing World Cup series. They finished seventh in Bled, Slovenia, fourth in Munich, Germany, and eighth in Lucerne, Switzerland. Their fourth place finish in a World Cup race (Munich) earned them the right to compete for the United States at the World Championships.

Being named to the team for the second year in a row is a huge step toward de Regt's lofty goal of making the 2012 Olympic Team. It has been a long road of non-stop training and competition since he began rowing at Norwalk River Rowing Association in 2001 at the age of 14. He was also one of the original members of the GMS Rowing Center in New Milford, started by Wilton's Guenter Beutter. If there was a regatta anywhere in the region, de Regt threw his single on top if his car and off he went. After graduating in 2009 from Trinity College, he was selected for the USA Lightweight Men's 4- that raced at the World Championships in Poznan, Poland. De Regt and Winter's other international experience came in 2006, where they won a silver medal for the U.S. in the lightweight quadruple sculls at the U-23 World Championships in Hazewinkel, Belgium.

"Jon and I are very happy with the way we performed against the top international lightweight doubles, including the 2008 Olympic Champions (Great Britain) and the 2009 World Champions (New Zealand). We are working hard to improve our speed and fitness and are looking forward to another opportunity to race against the best in the world," de Regt said.
