Road Runners Return to Longshore

The Road Runners Summer Series returns to Longshore Country Club one last time this Saturday for the last flat course of the season, a 4.7 mile race along the shoreline. After that, the races move inland and include some more challenging climbs.

The first three installments of this 10-race series, now in its 48th year, drew near-record fields, but last week's 4.1 miler had just 117 finishers, the lowest total in 10 years. Organizers attributed the drop to competition from another race in Norwalk and the extremely hot and humid conditions. "In that weather, I'm surprised anyone showed up," said Laddie Lawrence, the series director. Lawrence said Saturday's conditions were among the worst he's experienced in the 45 years he's been directing the series.

Much more pleasant weather is predicted for Saturday, and coupled with the flat course, could produce some fast times. The race starts at 8 a.m., and registration opens 30 minutes before. Complete information including course maps is available at the Road Runners website.
