Road Runners Head for the Hills

It will be time to head for the hills as the Westport Road Runners Summer Series enters its second half on Saturday. After five weeks of racing over relatively flat, if hot, seaside courses, runners will venture farther inland and encounter more challenging terrain as the distance continues to increase each week.

This week's race starts from Compo Beach and heads north on South Compo Road before making a loop on Imperial Avenue along the Saugatuck River. Just past the halfway point of the 5.85-mile course the climbs begin, with the most daunting coming on Greens Farms Road before a final downhill last mile to the finish by the cannons at Compo.

The more difficult terrain may be somewhat mitigated by the prospect of excellent summer racing weather, similar to that enjoyed by the runners last week, when temperatures at the start were below 70 and the humidity was negligible.

The race starts at 8 a.m. and registration begins 30 minutes beforehand in the beach bathhouse. Complete details and course maps are available at the Road Runners website.
