Road Races, Triathlons Welcome Fairfield Athletes

FAIRFIELD COUNTY,  Conn. – Summer’s unofficial penultimate weekend includes a lot of racing opportunities for runners and triathletes around Fairfield County.

There are road races on Friday in New Canaan and Saturday in Westport, while women have their choice of a triathlon or duathlon on Sunday in Norwalk. There is also a triathlon on Sunday in Bridgeport that will include many county contestants.

The fourth annual All Out For Autism 5K begins at 6 p.m. Friday in downtown New Canaan. Race proceeds go to building a fitness path especially designed for people with autism. The race begins at the New Balance store at 128 Main St. There is also a kids race, a 1K walk and Zumba.

Runners will take the starting line at 8 a.m. Saturday at Compo Beach in Westport for the ninth race in the Westport Summer Series. The series concludes with a 10-mile race on Sept. 1.

Trifitness of Fairfield sponsors the first women’s only race in the county on Sunday. The triathlon consists of a half-mile swim, 11-mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run. The duathlon is a 1.5 mile run, 11 mile ride and 3.5 mile run. The race was canceled last year due to Tropical Storm Irene. Part of the proceeds will go to TeamBrent to benefit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. TeamBrent was created in 2005 to battle childhood cancer.

Also on Sunday is the Park City Olympic Distance Triathlon in Bridgeport, hosted by Westport-based Team Mossman. Chris Thomas of Easton won last year’s event, which is a 1.5 kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride and a 10-kilometer run.
