NORWALK, Conn. Penn States Silas Redd, a sophomore from Norwalk, was named the Connecticut player of the year by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
The award is presented annually to the top college football player who is a resident of the state.The Connecticut player of the year is selected by the all-volunteer membership of the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
Redd played in high school at King in Stamford under coach Dan Gouin.
Redd will be honored at the Camp dinner on Jan. 14 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven. He is the first Penn State player to win the award.
Redd was a second-team All-Big Ten honoree. He finished the regular season with 1,188 rushing yards, good for the 12th best season all-time for a Penn State runner. He needs 49 yards in Penn State's TicketCity Bowl clash on Jan. 2 with No. 19 Houston to move into 10th place. Evan Royster (1,236 in 2008) and Curtis Enis (1,210 in 1996) rank No. 10 and 11.
Redd is No. 4 in the Big Ten Conference at 99.0 yards-per-game, with seven rushing touchdowns. He was limited for the final three games of the season by a collarbone/sternum injury, but is expected to be at 100 percent for the game with Houston.
Earlier in the week at the teams media day, Redd said hes anxious for a permanent coach to be named. Tom Bradley is serving in an interim basis after Joe Paterno resigned in November in the wake of a child abuse scandal.
"I can only speak for myself, but we'd like to know now," Redd said at media day. "But I'm not a part of the committee, I don't have anything to do with it. I've just got to play football."
