Recreational Athletes Have Unique Options

Recreational runners and triathletes will compete in some unique events this weekend around Fairfield County.

In Norwalk, the Lightfoot Summer Series steps off Saturday at 8 a.m. with a 3-mile run at Norwalk High School. Runners who leave a little in the tank can return to the roads later in the day for the New Canaan Mile, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

Early-risers can venture to Westport Sunday for the inaugural Targetraining Sherwood Island Spring Triathlon. Later, the Rowayton Fun Run, with distancs of 4.4 and 2.2 miles, begins at the Rowayton Community Center.

The Lightfoot is part of a five-race summer series that culminates in August with an 11-mile run. The next race in the series is a 5-miler on July 9. Runners can register for the entire series, or for individual races. Walkers are welcome at the 3-mile event. Runners who register for the entire series receive a t-shirt.

The New Canaan Mile begins at the New Balance Store, 128 Main St., and benefits the New Canaan High School Scholarship Fund. There are three heats–men’s, women’s and citizens’–and a kids mini mile (0.33 miles) afterward.

The Rowayton Fun Run is the 32nd edition of the race and goes through Rowayton and Bell Island.

The Targetraining Sherwood Island Sprint Triathlon is a half-mile swim, 13-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run. Portions of the proceeds benefit the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Pediatrics Department. Athletes can register online until 11:59 p.m. on Friday.
