Rain Holds Up Baseball Playoffs

The rain that has wreaked havoc all week with Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference baseball returned Saturday and forced the postponement of the New Canaan-Brien McMahon softball game. It also changed the schedule for next week's league playoffs.

New Canaan, which has already qualified for the playoffs, will play McMahon Monday at 4. The Rams also have a game at Trumbull Sunday at 2.

Since the regular-season is not complete, the FCIAC playoffs will now start on Tuesday. The semifinals have been pushed to Thursday and the championship game to Saturday, May 28.

New Canaan and McMahon started Saturday's game and played two innings before the umpires halted it. After a delay of about 30 minutes, the game was postponed until Monday. It will be replayed in its entirety.

The decision to adjust the playoff schedule is welcome news for coaches trying to save their pitching staff. New Canaan, for instance, will have played four straight days when it plays its first-round game on Tuesday. Peter Meadows threw two innings Saturday.

The teams for the FCIAC playoffs are nearly set. St. Joseph will be seeded No. 1. Danbury, McMahon, Norwalk, Warde, Greenwich and Staples have also qualified. New Canaan needs to win one of its last two games to secure its bid.
