WESTON, Conn. Platform tennis players from around the state will compete Saturday in the Connecticut Mixed Open, with the finals scheduled to be played late Saturday afternoon at Aspetuck Valley Country Club in Weston.
The tournament features two draws and 56 teams. Matches will also be played at Weston Field Club, Easton Racquet Club, the Country Club of New Canaan, the Patterson Club, the New Canaan Field Club and the Wilton Riding Club.
The tournament has been around for a while, but this is the second year at Aspetuck, said tournament director Juan Arraya. Arraya is also a member of a nationally ranked doubles team and the director of racquet sports at Aspetuck Valley. It has really grown a lot of over the past three years.
Mixed tournaments are rare in platform tennis tournaments. Most competitions are for men or women. Arraya and partner Sheri Shea have won two straight Connecticut Mixed titles. Shea is the head racquets professional at Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield. Platform tennis is also commonly referred to as paddle tennis, as the racquets are much smaller than standard racquets.
We have a lot of people from Fairfield County, Arraya said. Id say about 90 percent of the players are from the county.
