PAL Schedules Concussion Seminar

Would you know the right response if your child suffered a concussion? Would you even recognize it? If not, don't miss the seminar for parents and coaches, Sunday at Saugatuck Elementary School. The Westport Police Athletic League offers  training to help parents know the signs and symptoms. Concussions can occur in any athletic contest, as well as on a playground or skating rink, or after a fall from a tree.

Some symptoms are clear, such as confusion, amnesia and dizziness. Others are more subtle--say, concentration problems and sensitivity to light. Infants and toddlers might be listless and cranky. Most concussion go away by themselves but some require prompt medical attention.

This is the third year Westport PAL has offered the seminar. It's directed by Chris Nowinski, a former wrestler for World Wrestling Entertainment who was forced to retire after multiple concussions. He works with Dr. Robert Cantu of Boston University to raise awareness of the injury's devastating effects. Westport PAL director Carm Roda says that Nowinski shows a chilling video that drives home the seriousness of concussions. “You see football players who can’t name the 12 months,’’ Roda says. “They’ll say January, February, July.”

Concussion training is mandatory for coaches at Westport PAL--one of the few sports organizations that require it. “It’s better to educate coaches on what to look for and what to do,’’ Roda says. “It’s an investment in the safety of our kids.” The seminar begins at 10:30 a.m. Contact www.westportpal.org for more information.
