Our Sports Editor Wins County Honor

Main Street Connect Sports Editor Tom Renner, who has been writing about athletes and teams in Fairfield County since 1987, will be honored at the Hall of Fame SportsNight Monday at the Greenwich Regency Hyatt. Tom will receive the Bill Gonillo Award, which is given to a local sports media person.

The award  recognizes Tom for his passion for local sports and providing a supportive voice for the local sports community. The award is named after the former News 12 Sports Director who died suddenly in 2008 at the age of 44.

“I am surprised, humbled and honored to have been selected by the Fairfield County Sports Commission for this award,’’ Tom said. “It is the most rewarding recognition I’ve  received in my professional career.”

Renner came to Fairfield County in 1987 and spent 22 years at The Advocate in Stamford, where he  was a copy editor, Assistant Sports Editor and Sports Editor. He joined the Main Street Connect team in February and coordinates and reports sports for 10 towns. “I’m delighted to be the neighbor who brings you the sports news for our websites,’’ Tom says. “As readers shift their reading habits away from newspapers and to online platforms, I believe communities want a dependable information medium to keep them informed about their neighbors, friends and colleagues. I’m happy to be a part of that.”

Tom previously worked at newspapers in Pennsylvania and New York. He lives in Bethel with his wife, Robin, and daughters Caroline, 14 and Allison, 12. He coaches youth sports and is an accomplished runner. He has completed six marathons, including Boston in 2002 and 2004. He will run the Philadelphia Marathon this November.

Tickets are available for the SportsNight dinner through the Fairfield County Sports Commission website.
