On Your Mark, Westport, New Canaan Racers!

The opening race in the Westport Summer Series is one of the options for recreational runners over the holiday weekend. Another is the popular Four on the Fourth on Monday at 9 a.m. in New Canaan.

The New Canaan race begins at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's Church. Ryan Hopkins and Norwalk's Amy Fredericks won the men's and women's races last year. The first race was in 1983. Runners can register at the New Canaan New Balance store through 3 p.m. Sunday. Complete information is available on the race website.

Other nearby races include a 5K in Milford and an 8K in Bethel. The Lightfoot Summer Series in Norwalk resumes next weekend and also features the Mossman Triathlon in Norwalk and the Greenwich Point Swim.

The first leg of the 10-race Westport Series begins at 8 a.m. Saturday with a 2.3-mile run at Staples High School. Races are held each Saturday, and get progressively longer. The series concludes with a 10-miler on Sept. 3. All races begin at 8 a.m. Runners can register for individual races or for the series.

The race includes a Grand Prix scoring system in which runners accumulate points. Tom Parise won the men's overall title in 2010, and Catherine Gatlin of Westport, who won two races last year, took the women's overall title. The complete schedule and registration details are available on the Westport Road Runners website.
