Offense Struggles, But Norwalk Legion Finds a Win

NORWALK, Conn. – Somehow, some way, the Norwalk Senior Legion Post 12 baseball team found a way to beat Wilton in nine innings this weekend — and with only one hit. Wilton starter John Legaz held Norwalk hitless through eight innings, but thanks to walks and several key Wilton errors, Post 12 forced extra innings.

Andrew Seiden drew a bases-loaded walk and Leon Fleming added an insurance run to give Norwalk a 4-2 win.

“It’s weird. This is the second time we’ve been no-hit [through seven innings], but the kids stayed in it,” Norwalk manager Chris Brown said. “Sometimes that’s all you can ask for. Just keep playing and get the next pitch or the next at-bat.”

Legaz stymied Norwalk, throwing the second regulation-length no-hitter against Post 12 this season. But the breaks fell Norwalk’s way this time on some wacky plays in the top of the third.

Legaz should have been out of the inning with a 1-0 lead, but Mike Parlanti reached first on a dropped third strike. After Fleming walked to load the bases, Spencer Jacoby reached first on a fielding error by Wilton first baseman Hunter Quinn, allowing the tying run to score. Quinn then tried to throw Parlanti out advancing to third, but threw the ball away.

The two errors on one play gave Norwalk a 2-1 lead without the aid of a hit. Wilton scored its runs in equally wacky ways, the first coming on a sacrifice fly and the second on a balk by Norwalk starter Lukas LaBry.

The score stayed knotted at 2-2 thanks to Legaz’s dominance and LaBry’s ability to wiggle out of jams. LaBry and Mike Hughes, who came on to pitch three innings of relief, stranded 13 Wilton runners

Mike Carter finally broke up the no-hitter with a clean lead-off single to start the top of the ninth. A walk and another Wilton error loaded the bases for Seiden, who patiently drew his game-winning RBI walk.

Incredibly, Norwalk had 13 men reach base, despite collecting a lone hit.

Norwalk beat Wilton again a day later in a home-and-home series, 5-3. Norwalk Senior Legion (9-8) travels to Trumbull on Thursday. Post 12 needs to win six of its final 10 games to clinch a state playoff berth.
