Oak Hills Golfers Tee It Up on Opening Day

Opening Day for baseball is a few weeks away, but Norwalk golfers took their first official swings Friday when Oak Hills golf course opened for play.

“The first guys went off at 8:05,” said Vinny Grillo, head pro at the municipal course. “We’ve got about 50 booked already, and I expect it will be even busier this weekend with the nice weather. After the winter we’ve had, they’re itching to get out.”

Karim Lakhani played a few times last week on temporary tees and holes at the course, but was anxious to play his first official round of the year. “I’ve been waiting all winter for this,” he said.

“Usually you can play some during the winter,” added Rich Henry, another member of the foursome. “But with all the snow we had, there was no way.”

Grillo said the course was in excellent shape despite the tough winter. “We got through it well. We had a lot of snow, but fortunately not much ice,” he said. “Snow is actually good. The greens look great.” He added that most of last week’s rainwater has drained off. “The course is still wet in spots, but it’s draining.”

In addition to the usual crowd of regulars at Oak Hills, Grillo hopes to attract some younger players to the course. To that end, a new policy was approved that any paying adult can bring along a partner under 16 years old for free after 5 p.m. any day.
