Norwalk's Nanista Takes 17th at Nationals

Norwalk skater Kirstyn Nanista finished 17th in the country Saturday in the Intermediate Ladies division of the U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships in Salt Lake City. She also received a special award for high execution of an element during the competition.

Kirstyn is a 13-year-old student at St. Aloysius School in New Canaan. She skates for the Skating Club of Southern Connecticut, based in Darien, and trains at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford and in New Jersey. It was the second straight year that the young skater reached the national competition.

Nanista qualified for the finals in short and long programs with a strong qualifying skate Wednesday. Her short program Friday left her in 20th place. She rebounded with a strong performance in the free skate, finishing 16th. Her overall total of 80.06 points placed her 17th.

She received her special achievement award for superior execution of an element during Friday's short program. Kirstyn was the only girl in the competition to receive the award.
