NORWALK, Conn. Norwalks Eneas Freyre won the USA Triathlon Long Course Duathlon national championship Sunday in Cambridge, Md.
More than 280 elite endurance athletes ages 16 to 75 from 29 states participated in the race, which consisted of two 10K runs and a 70K bike.
Freyre, 36, a native of Greenwich and the head trainer at TargeTraining in Westport, won in 2:41:31. Defending champion Dave Slavinski of New Jersey was second in 2:53:32.
Freyre had two big advantages: his bike and fitness. He ran 34:07 for the first 10K, which was the sixth best time in the field. On the bike, however, Freyre made up nearly five minutes on Slavinski and finished in 1:37:06. He had the fastest time in the field for the bike.
In the final 10k, Freyre had the best time in the field. He ran 35:44, a blistering 5:46 per mile. Slavinski had the second best time in the final 10k with 36:43. Freyre tuned up for his big race last month with victories in events in Norwalk and Greenwich and took second in a race in Westport. He won his age group at the Duathlon National Championships last year.
The top 18 finishers in each age group will be eligible to compete in the ITU Long Course Duathlon World Championships to be held Sept. 2 in Zofingen, Switzerland.
