Norwalk Youth Football will be competing in a new league in the fall. The directors voted to remain with the American Youth Football organization and will play in the newly created Colonial Youth Football and Cheer League.
Other teams in the league include Aspetuck, Danbury, Monroe, Newtown and Shelton. Members of Norwalk's former league, Candlewood Valley, voted to move to the United Youth Football. Norwalk elected to stay with American Youth Football. "We thought this was a better fit for Norwalk,'' league President Joe LaValle said.
Several factors went into the decision, LaValle said. The American Youth organization has more towns and leagues in its jurisdiction, especially in New England. Competition beyond the local level is available, and many of the surrounding towns will be in the new league. Teams will have home and away games against each team.
One important factor for Norwalk was travel. In the Candlewood Valley League, teams traveled to several distant locales in New York state, such as Wappingers Falls, Mahopac and Yorktown. The towns in the new league are much closer.
