Norwalk Woman Runs Off With Half Marathon Win

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk's Julie Heaphy finished undefeated in her hometown this summer with a win in the women's division of Saturday’s Sam Elpern Half Marathon. Ansonia's Timothy Milenkevich ran to an overwhelming victory in the men's race.

There were 223 finishers, six off the highest total in the 34-year history of the race. There were nearly 280 pre-registered runners. Humidity and heat forced some to drop out, while others did not make it to the starting line.

Saturday's victory gives Heaphy, 29, five wins in the Lightfoot Running Club's Summer Series. She missed the 7-mile race in July, and won events at 3, 5, 9, 11 and 13.1 miles. She also won the Lightfoot Mother's Day 10K in May.

"Last weekend I didn't have a very good long run,'' said Heaphy, who is training for a marathon in Albany next month. "Usually, the longer the better. I had some good competition from some of the men in the race."

Heaphy paced the women in 1:29:03, an average of 6:48 per mile. She was followed across the finish line by Meredith Kalish of Greenwich (1:35:54) and Calla McNamara of Easton (1:36.31).

Milenkevich ran away from the men's field, finishing in 1:20.28. Dominique Christen of Harrison finished second in 1:26:03 and Darien's Brad Wellington grabbed third in 1:27.26.

Milenkevich won two races earlier this summer in the Lightfoot series, and finished second in another. Heaphy and Milenkevich were the overall series winners.
