Norwalk Sonics Soccer Team Nips Fairfield

NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk Junior Soccer Association Sonics, a U13 girls travel team, scored a 1-0 victory over Fairfield Lightning Sunday.

In the first half, the Sonics dominated the action at times, but kept getting stonewalled by the Fairfield goalie and defense. After nearly 15 minutes of action, Sonics forward Christy Russo finally broke through and rifled a shot that found the upper-right corner of the net. Fairfield mounted a number of counterattacks, but some key saves by keeper Amanda Barker frustrated the Fairfield forwards.

In the second half, Nazae Craw, Melissa Guzman and Evelyn Morris had some great shots on goal, but all were handled by the Fairfield goalie. In the last 10 minutes, Fairfield intensified the pressure and the ball spent more time in the Norwalk half. Some great saves by keeper Danielle Bonis and strong performance by defenders Samantha Ruess and Kathleen McElaney allowed Norwalk to hang on for the win. The Sonics are off to a great 2-0 start to their season.
