Norwalk Golfer Wins Ike Tournament

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk's Tommy McDonagh added another marquee trophy to his collection Tuesday by winning the 56th Ike Championship at Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville, N.J. McDonagh, a recent graduate of Penn State, plays out of Shorehaven in Norwalk. He won the Connecticut Amateur last week.

McDonagh finished 54 holes tied with Huntington's Joe Saladino at 5-under-par 211. The players were still tied after a three-hole aggregate playoff, sending them to sudden death. McDonagh won in sudden death on the fifth playoff hole, rolling in a downhill birdie putt.

"It feels awesome," McDonagh said. "I'm wiped out. It took pretty much all I had to finish that playoff, and I'm so happy I made that putt. To see that one roll in was just great."

Several other Fairfield County players also played well. Rowayton's Cameron Wilson, a sophomore at Stanford, finished tied for third at 213. New Canaan's Curtis Loop was fifth at 215, and Greenwich's David Pastore was eighth at 218.

McDonagh was interviewed by tournament host the Metropolitan Golf Association after the victory. Complete results are available on the association's website. The Ike is its premier amateur stroke play championship and features the top amateurs from Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.
