NORWALK, Conn. Rowaytons Cameron Wilson earned medalist honors and a berth in the U.S. Open by winning a sectional qualifying tournament at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J.
Wilson, a sophomore at Stanford University and a graduate of St. Lukes, finished at 6-under-par 136 for the 36-hole tournament. He shot 71-65, with five birdies in his final 11 holes.
He was one of four players to qualify for the U.S. Open, which will be played June 14-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. The other qualifiers from the New Jersey tournament were Jim Herman of Florida, Mark McCormick of New Jersey and Brian Gaffney, also of New Jersey.
Im so pumped right now, said Wilson, the 2009 Met Amateur and 2009 Met Golf Association Player of the Year in a release distributed by the MGA. My morning round was pretty mediocre. I made a bunch of birdies but I seemed to give one away after each one," Wilson said. "And I had four or five vicious lip-outs. When they started to fall early on in the second round, it just got the ball rolling. I just stayed in a good mindset the whole time. I didn't get too excited or caught up in how I was playing, I just kept telling myself you gotta make more birdies, you gotta make more birdies.
