Norwalk Falls To Wilton In District 1 Baseball

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk’s Little League got a good look at the powerful Wilton lineup Sunday in the quarterfinals of the District 1 Little League tournament.

The undefeated Wilton squad was as powerful as advertised.

Wilton’s Henry Strnecki led off the game with a solo home run and Wilton went on to eliminate Norwalk, 16-4, at Bisceglie Field in Weston. Wilton advances to Tuesday’s semifinals against Ridgefield National at 5:30 p.m. at Scalzi Park in Stamford.

“We hoped to get ahead in the count, but we hurt ourselves by falling behind and then having to pitch to them,’’ Norwalk manager Jim Benincaso said. “They’re a good-hitting team.”

Wilton scored three runs in the first and five in the second for a quick 8-0 lead before Norwalk could get through its batting order. Norwalk closed the gap with two runs, one coming home on an RBI single by Scott Whalen. Jeff Joslyn and Alex Canevari also had hits in the inning.

Wilton led 13-2 entering the bottom of the fourth, but Norwalk extended the game by scoring a pair of runs. Dax Generoso sluggged a home run and Nick Covino’s RBI single scored Canevari.

Logan Raymond was Norwalk’s most effective pitcher. He held Wilton scoreless in the fourth and fifth before tiring in the sixth, when Wilton added three more runs.

“I was happy we were able to push them to six innings,’’ Benincaso said. “The kids showed a lot of fight. I was just a little disappointed in our pitching. I thought it could’ve been a little better.”
