Norwalk Biddy Team Gets Hot in Title Run

Postseason tournaments are perfect for teams such as the Norwalk Biddy League seventh-graders.

After winning just two games during the regular season, the team went 3-0 in the Fairfield County Basketball League “C” Division to win the title Saturday at Greens Farms Academy. Norwalk defeated the Fairfield PAL Mustangs, 46-27, behind 26 points from Joey Cantey. Ralph Mangiat added 16 for Norwalk and Colby Scovel scored nine.

"The kids never gave up at all,'' coach Matt McQuillen said. "They kept working all season and learned to play as a team."

Norwalk beat the Stamford JCC, 54-53, in its first tournament game and topped UAC Stratford, 57-36, in the semifinals. Stamford JCC and the Mustangs were among the teams Norwalk lost to during a 2-19 regular season. A 69-45 win over the Newtown Gold in the final regular season game served notice the Biddy team might be peaking at the right time.

Cantey carried the team down the stretch, scoring 16 in the second half of Saturday's game. He also made six free throws in the fourth quarter when Fairfield tried to mount a comeback. Mangiat scored 13 of his 16 in the first half.

Norwalk Biddy Basketball will hold tryouts Saturday for sixth and seventh graders for its summer travel teams. Tryouts are from 2-3 p.m. at Ben Franklin School.
