Norwalk-Based Soccer Team Wins New Jersey Tourney

NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk-based Everton America under-13 regional boys soccer team won the MAPS Cup 2011 in Fort Dix, N.J., last weekend, beating an elite field that consisted of the 16 highest ranked teams in Region 1 of U.S. soccer.

The team includes players from across Fairfield County.

Everton beat Downtown United (NYE) 3-1 in its opening game before besting North Union United (PAE) 6-1 to complete a successful first day. In Sunday’s game, Everton tied World Class FC (NYE) in its final group game, 2-2. In the championship game, Everton beat the East Meadow Hawks, 4-0.

“It was a positive weekend all round, great performances and some great goals scored and a wonderful way to finish the season with the team,’’ coach Alex Cunliffe said. “The boys are building a reputation and being recognized throughout the region for their results and performances”.

Everton also won the MAPS Cup and the 2011 Peter Renzulli Labor Day tournament in Long Island. It reached the finals of the YMS Columbus Cup in Pennsylvania, narrowly losing out on penalty kicks.

The boys also are in first place in the North East Elite Soccer League with a record of 4-0-1 and have qualified for the knock out stage of the 2011-2012 NY Cup. The group is scheduled to participate in tournaments and competitions across the country in 2012.
