Norwalk 8th Grade Girls Nipped by Fairfield

The Norwalk Black eighth grade girls basketball team lost a 10-point lead in the final quarter Saturday and fell to Fairfield PAL, 34-33, in the B Division a Fairfield County Basketball League playoff game.

Norwalk (14-12) will play either Bridgeport or Newtown Sunday at 11:20 p.m. at St. Joseph High School. If Norwalk wins, it will still advance to the title game of the tournament and could meet Fairfield again for the tournament title next Sunday.

Claire O'Neill, Kendra Fitzpatrick and Kyle Courtney scored six points apiece for Norwalk.

Norwalk led 33-23 with five minutes left before Fairfield mounted its comeback. Norwalk led 33-26 left with 4:26 left before Fairfield's Jackie Brewster (13 points) scored on three successive trips to bring her team within 33-32. Fairfield took the lead with 55 seconds left on a basket by Katie Gardella. Norwalk turned the ball over on its next possession, and couldn't control a rebound after a missed free throw by Fairfield with 25 seconds left.

Norwalk got the ball with 22.7 remaining for a shot at a go-ahead basket. Its final chance came with 7.2 seconds left after a timeout, but Norwalk turned the ball over on an inbounds play.
