Norton Stands Tall at Oak Hills

Sue Norton has lost count of how many times she has been president of the Oak Hills Women's Golf Association. "It's four or five,'' she says. She's also back at the helm for another term this year. "Some people,'' she says kiddingly, "have greatness thrust upon them."

Norton has been a fixture on the women's board at Oak Hills, Norwalk's public golf facility, for about 18 years. She started playing at Oak Hills about 20 years ago, and initially just played to acquire a handicap. The association president asked her to become more active. "She hooked me in like a big fish, right into the boat,'' Norton says. She has served on the board since then.

Norton handles whatever role the board needs her. Last year, she organized the member-guest tournament for then president Denise Drake. This year she worked on the opening day scramble and will help coordinate some other tournaments. She's also on a handful of committees. The group conducts tournaments from April through October. "It is,'' Norton says, "a very active group." Norton has developed friendships with many women on the board during her tenure.

The 68-year-old also plays, and quite well. She has won the club championship "four or five times" – again, she has lost count – and competes in the weekly tournaments. A lifelong athlete, she has played softball, badminton, racquetball, tennis and paddle tennis competitively. She still plays tennis year-round and paddle tennis in the winter. She even sings in the Greenwich Choral Society.

Norton serves as the OHWGA president, but the organization runs on teamwork. "It's important that everybody helps,'' Norton says. "We're very good at working together. You're basically only as good as the people who are running it. It's like a business."
