New Canaan, Darien Riders Team Up for Challenge

A team of riders from New Canaan and Darien will be among the 1,000 cyclists riding in the seventh annual Connecticut Challenge on July 30.  The ride funds cancer survivorship programs throughout the state.

Team Darien/New Canaan includes members of the Mazzone, Whittaker, Murphy and Gleason families. They are riding for the fifth straight year in the challenge.

Middlesex Middle School students Luke Whittaker, a two-time cancer survivor; Sammee Mazzone; and Josh Gleason, are training to ride again this year on the 25-mile course, along with friends and family members who are riding on the 10-, 50-, 75- and 100-mile courses.

Hindley School student Kasey Mazzone and Sam Gleason will help lead the new Junior Challenge course, a series of speed, strength and agility challenges for the youngest participants. The Junior Challenge is presented by Parisi Speed School of Stamford.

"We hope that riders and volunteers from each and every town and city in Connecticut will join us on July 30 in Westport to ride in support of cancer survivors, making it a truly great statewide event and a great day for Connecticut," said Bob Mazzone, executive director.

Since the CT Challenge's inception in 2005, the organization has been funding cancer survivor programs throughout the state. "What we're doing here in Connecticut is unique. The Connecticut Challenge Bike Ride makes it all possible,'' Mazzone said.

Registration is open for the ride. Anyone interested in riding, putting a team of riders together or volunteering is encouraged to visit the event's website.

Proceeds support a growing statewide network of hospitals that have cancer survivorship programs and create special programs for cancer survivors. To learn more about the CT Challenge, how to join Team Darien or how to support the team or the event, visit the team's website or contact Kim Kiner Mazzone at kimberleekiner@hotmail.com or 203-948-6237.
