Madaffari Takes Third In Wilton XC Meet

WILTON, Conn. – In a meet that was about as close as it could be, the New Canaan boys cross country team edged host Wilton by a single point, 27-28, at Allen's Meadows Tuesday.

Racing over the same course they'd run on Saturday at the Wilton Invitational, the Rams were led by Alex Spinu's first-place finish. He and Brien McMahon's Chris Madaffari ran virtually stride for stride for most of the 3.15-mile course before Spinu opened some daylight in the final 400 meters. Wilton super-freshman Spencer Brown leapfrogged past Madaffari to take second, although both were given the same time.

New Canaan and Wilton continued to alternate the first six scoring places, then flip-flopped for the final four. But the margin the Rams established from their top three was enough to give them the win.

In contrast, the girls race was a runaway for the host Warriors, who, led by Alosha Southern's win, took the next five places to score a perfect 15 points against the other four teams, which also included Stamford and Bassick.
