Milenkevich Wins Fairfield Race

Tim Milenkevich runs a lot of races, and wins his share of them. What made his victory in Sunday's Christine's Run It While You Can 5k in Fairfield especially sweet was a new personal best.

Milenkevich, 28, of Ansonia cruised to a comfortable victory in 16:06. He averaged 5:12 per mile and won by 23 seconds over Anatolie Vartosu of Stamford. Kevin Woodin of West Haven was third in 17:11.

The fast, flat course was perfect for Milenkevich, who says he has focused on speed work recently after a string of disappointing marathons. "I haven't had a good marathon in a while, so I thought I might need to step back to get a little faster,'' Milenkevich says. "I've been doing mile intervals and that seems to help."

Although he won the race, he still believes he's better suited for longer distances, such as 10ks and 10-mile runs. He's gearing for the Connecticut 10-mile championship in the summer. He was hardly pushed Sunday after chasing an early rabbit. "There was no one that could hang with me,'' he says. "The biggest thing I was happy with my time. It's always nice to set a personal best."

There were 324 finishers in the race. Complete results are available here.
