The Mid Fairfield Stars 14-year-old girls hockey team dropped a tough 3-2 shootout loss to Assabet Valley of Massachusetts on Thursday in the Tier 1 national tournament in Rochester, Mich.
Ashley Carbone and Tiana Cass scored for the Stars, who opened the tournament with a 5-1 victory Wednesday. Darien's Sasha Fritts had an assist for the Stars.
The Stars pushed Assabet Valley, the nation's top-ranked team on the national website myhockeyrankings.com, into a five-minute overtime session.
Neither team scored in overtime. Emma Farrel, the Stars goalie, stopped four of the five shootout attempts. Assabet goalie Brooke Wolejko made great saves on all five Stars shooters.
The Stars outshot Assabet 37-27. The Stars picked up one point in the overall standings. They play the Michigan host team Honeybaked on Friday. A win would solidify a spot in the quarterfinals Saturday.
The Mid Fairfield 12-year-old girls team dropped a 6-0 decision to Assabet Valley. The winners broke the game open with four second-period goals. Goalie Courtney DeNaut of Greenwich made 33 saves.
