McMahon Stopped by Staples' Speer

Brien McMahon's baseball team has run into some outstanding pitchers in its three-game losing streak. Wednesday, the Senators saw perhaps the league's best in Staples' senior David Speer.

Speer struck out 15 and pitched a two-hitter to lead the Wreckers (4-0) to a 10-1 victory over McMahon (2-3). The Senators (0-3 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference) were coming off a loss Monday to Trinity Catholic that ended on a walk-off grand slam.

"The hangover is because you're facing one of the best pitchers in the league,'' Brien McMahon coach John Cross said. "He pitched a good game and they're a good team."

Staples took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Danny Carbone's two-run home run, and added an unearned run in the second. McMahon scored in the second when Chris Holomokoff's ball fell for a three-base error as Nick Cafero raced home.

Speer came back to strike out the next two batters and end the inning. The Staples' left-hander didn't allow a runner after the third inning and struck out 10 of the last 12 batters.

Eric Stenger pitched well for five innings for the Senators, allowing just two hits and two earned runs. In the sixth, Staples combined two triples, two singles and two walks off of Stenger and Bryan Daniello to score five runs.

"We're still a good team,'' Cross said. "We need to start playing good baseball."
